Whole Roast Chicken + Videography

Yesterday, Jeremy and I cooked one of the roast chicken recipes from the new Julius Roberts cookbook. We’ve tried cooking a whole chicken before and it didn’t turn out great (the infamous Jamie Oliver Milk Chicken – disgusting. I’m pretty sure Jamie Oliver doesn’t know how to cook).

But this recipe was simple and delicious. Neither of us are a fan of fennel, so we swapped that out for yellow onions. Otherwise, we followed the recipe as is and got a really moist, delicious chicken. The potatoes absorbed a ton of the lemon flavor and tasted almost like greek potatoes. My one complaint was that the chicken tasted relatively plain compared to the potatoes. Jeremy suggested that next time we put some additional lemon inside the chicken and see if that helps it imbue the flavor.

We, well I, also took this as an opportunity to practice some photo and video. The kitchen and dining room in my apartment have almost no natural light, which make them horrible for photos. I worked on trying a few things with my flash to try to emulate a more “natural light” look and I think some of the kitchen photos came out pretty good.

The final dish photos were less successful – I think I incorrectly adjusted the angle of the flash and the light ended up harder than in the kitchen.

I also have been wanting to try out more videography. Unfortunately, my canon, while amazing for photos, isn’t as good for video. But, I’m trying to test things out and make due before investing in a video camera. I’ve also never found a video editing software I found very intuitive until trying out DaVinci Resolve for these clips.

Nothing special here, but having some fun trying something new and excited to try more. I’d love to do some knitting project videos, and, if we can figure out the lighting, some more cooking videos.

I’ve also been watching a ton of DIY cabin/homestead videos. I’ve really enjoyed roaming wild rosie – she’s doing everything herself, doesn’t take herself too seriously, and, most importantly, doesn’t feel like I’m just watching a stream of endorsements for random products.

I also started (but still haven’t finished) watching this other DIY cabin video, which is more in the ambient/asmr area, and have really enjoyed it so fr.

One day, I hope to be able to take beautiful videos like this on our farm.
